High Road School of Delaware
The High Road School of Delaware has had an exciting start to 2012! Under the leadership of a new director, Mr. Ian Cassidy, and in a newly renovated building, the program is better than ever! The students and staff are excited to show off their school pride at the upcoming grand re- opening on February 24, 2012. For details, please see our school news page.
The program in Delaware, like other High Road Schools across the country, focuses on academic and behavioral needs of students with special education services. Our highly structured program is specifically designed to meet the individualized academic and therapeutic needs of students with emotional/behavioral disabilities, autism spectrum disorder, intellectual disabilities, and learning disabilities, as well as other disabilities under IDEA. Students are referred to the program by local school systems.
The experienced staff hold the students to a high level of accountability for their education and their behavior while exercising empathy through the assessment of each student’s personal strengths and weaknesses. Students are taught in a tutorial-style method, in which students are instructed one-on-one with their teacher every morning in the core academic subjects of reading, mathematics, and writing. Academic skills are further developed and reinforced using computer programs and a curriculum individualized to cater to each student’s specific learning style.
Our students’ curricula are created in conjunction with the state of Delaware’s academic standards, and are based upon each student’s current Individualized Education Plan or IEP.

What types of things to do like to do?
I love to ride horses, go to the library, watch movies, go shopping and read books. Jewelry like peals and diamonds interest me. I also like learning about Geography and I’m learning to like Math. To relax, I enjoy candles and getting massages.
Sierra Sonoma Radio Interview

Go online and listen to Sierra-Sonoma’s own Spice Edwards and one of her students are interviewed yesterday morning on-the-air at KSRO-Talk Radio. Hosts David Page and Curtis Kim dedicated quite a bit of air time to the WorkAbility program at the Sierra School of Sonoma County in Santa Rosa.
Special Needs Students Do a 180 in Reading, Math

LAUREL, Md. – March 21, 2011 – Kelly Coffey used to agonize over reading about extreme Rollerblading more than he’d worry about popping an “Ollie” or pulling a mid-air “Indy.” At 16, Kelly could skate like a champ, but he said he could barely read.
“I would just look at the pictures in my extreme Rollerblade or BMX bike magazines then shove them off to the side. I didn’t care about reading,” said Coffey, of Jessup, Md. “But, reading doesn’t intimidate me anymore. I’ve done a ‘180.’ I have more confidence in myself when I see words on a page.”
