Caroline County Public Schools (CCPS) are committed to providing the best services possible to their entire school population. As a result, CCPS Administrators were seeking to enhance the services for their students with challenging school behaviors. During the summer of 2010, a Private-Public Partnership began between Caroline County Public Schools and High Road Schools.
This partnership creates opportunities for CCPS students who are in need of intensive behavior support to remain in their local community. It allows students to have direct access to CCPS curriculum, equipment, and amenities while benefitting from the targeted research-based interventions that have long been a staple of the High Road Schools Program.
Predicated on strong collaboration and communication amongst both the High Road and CCPS staff, the programs are designed to provide support and services for students to increase both academic and social functioning. The students are served in highly structured therapeutic classroom settings inside CCPS public schools. The academic, emotional, and behavioral needs of each student are met through a low staff to student ratio, individualized and small group academics, counseling services, and a comprehensive behavior management system. High Road School staff work together with CCPS special education and general education teachers in order for students to receive maximum benefit of both the school and High Road program resources.
With the start of the 2010-2011 school year, Denton Elementary school became the site of the first In-District Classroom. As a result of its great success, the partnership grew to address the needs of high school students. Mr. John Lischner, Principal, Denton Elementary school applauds High Road School and their efforts “…through our partnership, students receive highly individualized instruction to meet their learning goals.”
At the start of the 2011-2012 school year, this exciting partnership expanded with the opening of an In-District Classroom at North Caroline High School (NCHS). In just less than a year, our program has truly become an integral component of the high school. NCHS Principal Brian T. Spiering reflected on the first semester of the partnership, “I have been impressed and pleased with our ongoing partnership with High Road Schools. This program is contributing daily to the smooth operation of North Caroline High School. High Road very quickly and effectively put in place a research-based program to serve our most challenging and at risk population of students. Most importantly, I am impressed by the consistency of this program and their ability to effectively communicate with all stakeholders."

The High Road School at Denton Elementary School is a contracted special education classroom within Denton Elementary School for students with emotional disabilities for K through fifth graders. Students receive a highly individualized, multisensory, academic and behavioral program that is based on the assessment of each student’s needs and strengths. The program focuses on the primary objective of accelerating student performance to a level necessary to reach achievement standards aligned with the Maryland State Curriculum.
Located within Denton Elementary School, High Road School students share the public school’s curriculum, materials, equipment, and amenities, while targeted research-based interventions have been customized to advance the reading, writing, and math skills of challenged students, along with their ability to better understand and master content. Ultimately, we are committed to building confidence and competence in every one of our students by providing them with consistent and structured instruction in deficit areas and teaching them ultimately how to become independent learners in the general education setting. Most importantly, we never-never give up on a child. In High Road School at Denton Elementary, our students’ success is our steadfast focus and mission.

DES Holiday Festivities
The High Road students at DES participated in many holiday activities in the days leading up to the December winter break. Our students helped prepare for the festivities by coloring classroom party invitations, decorating cookies for the party and making gifts for someone special outside of school. Santa was enthusiastically welcomed to the classroom and fellow students from nearby classrooms were invited to join in the visit with Santa. A challenging game of pin the nose on the reindeer was enjoyed by Santa and students. The holiday activities concluded with a classroom pizza party with families members and DES specials teachers. Students and their guests enjoyed lunch, holiday bingo, and decorating edible Christmas trees.
