The High Road Learning Academy at Benjamin Stoddert Middle School is a contracted special education classroom within Benjamin Stoddert Middle School dedicated to sixth to eighth graders who face a variety of disabilities. We have the unique opportunity to deliver a highly individualized, multisensory academic program that is based on a thorough assessment of each student’s needs and strengths. And because this program is a collaborative effort with the Charles County Public School System, we stay focused on the primary objective of accelerating student performance to a level necessary to reach achievement standards aligned with the Maryland State Curriculum.

The High Road Learning Academy allows students to share the public school’s curriculum, materials, equipment, and amenities, yet our targeted research-based interventions have been customized to advance the reading, writing, and math skills of challenged students, along with their ability to better understand and master content. Ultimately, we are committed to building confidence and competence in every one of our students, so we provide them with consistent and structured

instruction in deficit areas and we teach them how to become independent learners in the general education setting. Most importantly, we never — never — give up on a child. At High Road, our students’ success is our steadfast mission.

Mr. Estep Enjoys Teaching

Michael Estep is currently the teacher of the Benjamin Stoddert High Road Learning Academy classroom. Michael is a native of Southern Maryland and grew up not only attending its schools but also participating in many of the athletic teams. Michael played varsity basketball for all four years at Chopticon High School as well as varsity football for his junior and senior years. Upon graduation he had several scholarship offers for both sports. Michael chose to attend the University of Connecticut where he played as a starting free safety on the football team all four years. Michael graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in economics in 2006. Michael could have chosen to pursue his athletic career or to start in the financial field, but instead chose to work with students. He originally returned to his former high school where he both taught and coached football. He was soon offered another position exclusively coaching for the University of Maine’s football team. Unfortunately, this was not fulfilling his passion and desire to influence the community youth, so he took a position as a teacher’s assistant in the High Road program. He has been with the company since. Michael was promoted to teacher this fall where he has been making a difference in the lives of the Benjamin Stoddert Middle School students since. With his hard work and dedication, Mr. Estep has played a vital role in making our in-district program at Benjamin Stoddert a success.

Morning Announcer

Jeremiah Charity participated in the Benjamin Stoddert school community by becoming a morning announcer for the entire month of January. Many students throughout the school applied for the position, but Jeremiah was able to prove that he was the right student for the job and became one of the best announcers the school has had this year. His favorite part of announcing was the pledge of allegiance, but as long as he was not asked to pronounce the names of some of the students in school Jeremiah had little problem. Additionally, Jeremiah developed a great relationship with the front office staff, which has continued even after his assigned month.

Jeremiah off to the races

Jeremiah Charity, a seventh grader in the Benjamin Stoddert High Road Learning Academy, has shown tremendous improvement both behaviorally and academically. He has done a great job of maintaining blue level and has earned the right to be mainstreamed back into his elective classes. Jeremiah has currently earned the privilege of going to both his gym class and home economics. This semester, he has shown an affinity for sewing and will be finishing his first assigned project (a draw-string bag) soon.

Students Hard at Work

The start of the school year, the students of the High Road Learning Academy at Benjamin Stoddert have shown tremendous effort and energy toward their school work.  Each day, the students come to school ready to work.
