"The High Road Primary Programs are pleased to announce that our students are now learning American Sign Language as a special within our programs. Ms. Tammy Whitaker, the instructor, has been well received and the students have truly enjoyed this new learning experience and are using their sign language throughout the school day. The students are looking forward to our annual holiday buffet as a time to 'show off' their new skills."
The High Road Primary Academy, located in Northwest Washington, DC is a comprehensive learning program serving students with Learning Disabilities. We pride ourselves on reaching those students who have not achieved success in other academic settings. We develop an individualized academic program for each student, meeting them where they are, and adhering to our mission of:
"Building Confidence and Competence Through Personalized Academic Interventions.”
Specialized Reading Program
New this year is Corrective Reading (SRA/McGraw), an intensive reading program that targets students with reading delays and has a proven track record in making successful gains. This specialized reading program is designed for students who struggle with reading and Corrective Reading provides explicit, sequential, and systematic instruction in this academic area. The program addresses phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, and comprehension. Corrective Reading has been proven to be successful in classrooms across the country and now it is being implemented at High Road Primary Programs for students in grades 3-6. For students falling below those grade levels, we implement either Developmental Reading or Teaching Mastery to address their specific reading challenges. These intensive reading strategies are implemented both in the classroom as well as “pull-outs” by our Reading Specialist, Ms. Stacy Gilmore.
Ms. Gilmore, a graduate of UVA, completed her M.A. in Special Education at San Diego State University. She has worked as a special education teacher for over 6 years, specializing in reading instruction and behavior management. She served as a program coordinator of the Urban Skills Center, a transition program focused on providing academic, functional, and vocational services for students with special needs. Ms. Gilmore is now the Reading Specialist at High Road Primary Programs, working with students and teachers to improve reading levels and outcomes for all our students.
Welcome Ms. Gilmore!
Please feel free to contact the programs directly for any additional information with regard to our reading programs.
STUDENT STORE ALL NEW FOR SY 2009-2010
As always, in an effort to enhance and reward appropriate school behavior, as well as, teach an important life skill to our students, the Primary Programs have retooled the student store this year. Students “earn” school money (play) depending on their levels; they may deposit these monies into their account, and then spend at the student store. In making purchases, the students learn to budget, have a better understanding of the value of bills and coins, become able to produce the correct amount for their purchases, and be able determine if they received the appropriate change.
The Student Store teaches the students social skills, appropriate purchase-making, and the value of money earned. The Student Store is held once a month, and follows themes for items available for purchase. For example, Student Store held in December will highlight holiday themed gifts. Twice yearly, will be a sale, complete with flyers of reduced items!
Dear Parent/Guardian,
High Road School welcomes you back from the summer and we hoped you had a wonderful summer and are ready for another exciting school year. This year High Road has adopted the District of Columbia’s Public School Dress Code/Uniform rulemaking that was enacted on March 5, 2009 by the City Council approval and Mayor’s order.
We are excited to require the dress code policy and maintain compliance the local school district. The Student Government Associations at our schools have also strongly supported this transition.
Please request a student shirt order forms, which require your completion, payment and submission to us as soon as possible. All students are required to wear the High Road for short sleeve or long sleeved and khaki bottoms to school on a daily basis.
Parents, Guardians thank you for the continued support and we look forward to another great school year!
