Math Day
Math Day is Number ONE!!
Sierra School at Eastern – Lower, celebrated its 3rd Annual Math Day on January 15, 2010! Students enjoyed participating in twenty-four different math activities and/or games. Sierra students have never had so much fun learning! Although all the activities were a hit, some of the favorites included: Calculator Math – where students computed a variety of numbers for a surprising “upside down”
answer, the Shopping Table – where “customers” entered the store, purchased items, added up the prices of those items and then paid the clerk, and Chew the Taffy Count – where students had to estimate how many chews it would take to eat a piece of taffy and then see how close they came to being right!
A few other tables that were mathematical hits included: Brai
n Teasers, Piggy Bank Math, The Mad Minute, Sorting, and The Guessing Jar. Graphs, which are a critical part of math, were not ignored during this event. Students charted their height on the “How Tall Are You?” graph, and charted the number of sit-ups they could complete in one minutes on the “Great Sit Up Challenge” graph.
The students had a wonderful time during this event, which was only possible due to the assistance and cooperation of the amazing Sierra at Eastern – Upper students.
These volunteers facilitated the tables and assisted our younger students in completing each of the activities. At the end of the day, students who had their “Math Day Checklist” cards completed came and collected their reward from the prize booth. It was a terrific afternoon and the students not only learned math, but learned that learning math can be great fun!
