High Road Academy of Washington DC (HRA) is a specialized school for students with learning disabilities. Our school offers small group setting, one on one instruction, behavioral supports and individualized education program for each student. Our classrooms range from ten to twelve students and are lead by a certified teacher and a teaching assistant. On staff we have a reading specialist that works closely with the Reading and English teachers to monitor progress of each student. Our teachers use programs such as Corrective Reading and Read Naturally along with the curriculum to enhance our students’ academic progress.
Within the classroom or through pullout, our students have a range of related services that include speech/language, occupational therapy, physical therapy, individual and group therapy provided by a licensed social worker. All related service providers work on goals that are specific to the students to needs.
HRA offers two tracks for our students: Diploma track and a Certificate track. The Diploma track students have 24.0 Carnegie units to complete in order to receive a high school diploma. HRA has a fantastic staff certified to teach in all content areas in order for students to reach their fullest academic potential. Our students work closely with their transition specialist to focus on their plans after high school. The Certificate track program has access to our wonderful DC-PACT program that offers many job prep courses. Students take Math, Reading, Job Prep & Life Skills courses to work on all of their individualized education plan goals. They also have access to specific job prep courses such as: Culinary Arts, Graphic Design, Networking, Video Production, Automotive, Carpentry, Barbering, Cosmetology and Childcare. You will find more information about this great program under Transition on this web page. The diploma and certificate curriculum is accompanied by supplemental materials such as guest speakers, special events, field trips, and on site job experience.
