I joined the SESI team in 2002 and it was one of the best decisions I ever made. I am originally from Rhode Island and attended the University of Massachusetts. I graduated with a degree in anthropology. After I graduated, I moved to Maine and fell into a job as a teaching assistant working with special needs children in a small class setting. Within that single job experience, I found my home and my true calling. I knew that working with special needs children was my future. I also knew that escaping the cold weather was in my future.
Upon my arrival in San Diego I enrolled in classes in order to obtain my California teaching credential and a masters degree in special education. At the same time, I began working at Sierra as a 1:1 aide. I really enjoyed working within the Sierra Academy educational model and I was soon able to obtain a full time teaching position. I taught for four years with increasing responsibilities eventually culminating in a role as lead teacher. Last year, I was offered the job as Director of Sierra Academy.
I am so excited to be in a leadership role here at Sierra Academy. As director, I have the best of both worlds because I am still able to interact with the students on a daily basis, and I am also able to implement change within the program. There are so many opportunities to grow and expand with the ever-changing needs of our student population. I am extremely fortunate to have such incredible people working here on our team. The strength, warmth, creativity, and endless energy they put into the students are inspirational. Everyday, the professionals at Sierra Academy go the extra mile to provide a higher standard and level of education and extra curricular activities for our students.
